What is tuition remission?

Learn how UC's tuition remission program supports employees and their families, covering tuition costs for undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs to help you advance your career.

At the University of Cincinnati, we put education into action. Not just for our students, but also for employees. One of the key benefits of working in higher education is the opportunity to enhance your skills, career, and knowledge through tuition remission programs.

What is tuition remission?

Tuition remission is a valuable employee benefit that differs from tuition reimbursement. While many employers offer tuition reimbursement — meaning the employee pays upfront and may be reimbursed after meeting specific conditions, usually up to a cap of $5,250 per year — tuition remission is structured differently. With tuition remission, the employer directly finances the cost of education, often with fewer upfront costs for the employee.

If you decide to further your education at the University of Cincinnati, UC helps cover tuition costs as part of its benefits package. Tuition remission at UC includes undergraduate and graduate tuition in most programs, giving you the flexibility to pursue advanced degrees, like an MBA or PhD, without the financial burden. At UC, we invest in our team members' growth and professional advancement.

Who qualifies for tuition remission?

When you work at UC, you can begin enjoying the benefits of tuition remission without a long wait. It becomes available the semester that begins after the first of the month following 28 days of employment. Tuition remission benefits mean that UC believes in you and your potential. We want to see you grow and succeed and we’re willing to invest in your future.

And the best part? It isn’t limited to just you. Tuition remission benefits can cover the employee, the employee’s spouse or domestic partner and the employee’s dependents. If you’ve been balancing a career and a family, rest assured knowing your children can get a UC degree and graduate with no student debt.

What courses are eligible for tuition remission?

Tuition remission at UC applies to a wide selection of undergraduate and graduate programs. For those looking to grow professionally without the time commitment of a full degree, UC’s many graduate certificates are also eligible, enabling you to boost your career in key areas. With no cap on the number of credit hours covered, tuition remission allows you to learn at your pace, focusing on the subjects and skills that align with your professional goals.

Start by reflecting on which of UC’s programs will elevate your career. With tuition remission, UC provides the resources and support to take your expertise to the next level, making lifelong learning accessible and affordable.
